A Pursuit For The Nose

Be careful, when you buy a perfume bottle, most of the cost goes to packaging, advertising, sales profits and taxes. Only a small percentage, in fact about ten percent, is spent on aromatherapy costs. So why buy when you can make your own perfume? Not only will you be able to save money, but you'll have fun searching for the perfect scent.

One of the biggest benefits of making your own perfume is that you don't have to worry about chemicals and preservatives coming into contact with your skin. Since you will most likely be working with natural materials, you don't have to worry about the potential effects of synthetic materials on your body.

However, care should always be taken when using different essential oils. Some people may still experience allergic reactions to certain oils. It is therefore important to know or be aware of your body chemistry before experimenting with the blend of fragrances.

Let's first distinguish between the different types of perfumes. Basically, perfume is a mixture of aromatic compounds and diluted with alcohol and water. The amounts of essential oils that dissolve in a mixture determine whether it can be called a perfume or a cologne. The order of highest to lowest concentration of oils in the sequence would be: perfume, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, cologne, and body splash.

When we say perfume, the mixture of essential oils is 25 to 40%. As for the Eau du Parfum, it is 15-30% aromatic. Eau de Cologne has a lighter content of essential oils. This type of perfume usually contains around 5-15% aromatic compounds. Eau de toilette or sometimes called body spray contains only 3-5% aromatic substances. The body mist is ideally used after showering or bathing.

When making your own perfume, you can choose which solvent to use to dilute the mixture. Available at your disposal either jojoba or alcohol. Both have distinct differences and advantages. Jojoba is ideal for fragrance blends because it never goes rancid.

When creating your own fragrance blends, it's best to use fragrance only on pulse points. Nowhere more did the smell bleed. To dilute the mixture in the traditional way, you can use grain alcohol or high-quality vodka. Alcohol makes the mixture more volatile. The problem with alcohol is that you have to let the flavor develop. If you don't, the smell will be more like alcohol than perfume. The usual proportions of alcohol and perfume mixture are about three or four milliliters of mixture with five or 10 drops of alcohol.

Creating your own perfume should be fun. Don't get too carried away with the scent mixing technique. Explore and try to create combinations no one else has heard of. You never know, the resulting mix might be perfect for your body chemistry.

Scents and perfumes react differently when applied to your body. Choosing the right one for you is like choosing the right color to dress in or the right pair of shoes to wear. Perfume cannot be worn arbitrarily. The resulting smell could be disastrous. That's why you need to experiment more when creating your own perfume. Experiment with different scent combinations until you find what works best for you.
